What
is CORBA?
CORBA is a technology for developing portable, re-usable,
interoperable, scalable, distributable and configurable
softwares. Most of the functionalities can be re-used
instead of writing codes. So it enables very high productivity,
less cost, more reliable and faster to market softwares.
It is master of all the current technologies.
CORBA is difficult?
If by difficult you mean learning about the new concepts
involved, using new tools, etc. yes it is as difficult
as may be any other simple technology. But beauty of
CORBA lies in the kind of complex problems it can solve.
CORBA is in other words technology derived from experience
of industry spcialists in best practices and patterns
and they are in-built within CORBA.
Where it is used?
You should have asked where it is not used? Anyway,
now that you have asked, some of the areas of its application
are telecom sector (for interoperability and management),
Air Traffic Control systems, Food Processing and Packaging
Services, Imaging systems, Avionics, Fueling systems,
Rail signaling, OTR vehicles, GPS integration, track/road/bridge/tunnel
management and operations etc. is growing, Visual Effects
& Animation by ESC Entertainment, Steel manufacturers
like Siemens. It is used for mission critical systems
like control systems for nuclear chain reaction, software
radios. Virtually all the major and minor software domain
uses CORBA.
How to learn CORBA?
Why? OK..k. for serious effort Visit OMG site, and download
CORBA standard specifications, available freely, and
start reading it. Easier way of learning is get basic
training in CORBA and then jump into world of CORBA.
I read recently that CORBA is dying..
Me too!! Am afraid, why it is still not dead?
Since its initial version (from 1991) its demise has
been predicted so many times if we listen to those with
vested interests. How many of recent technologies have
survived for more than 17 yrs and still flourishing?
What is the latest area where CORBA is being applied
or used?
Read our section on SDR FAQ.
